open air 2007 |
After having several trips to Riga, organising great events and won a lot of new friends, we decided to celebrate a festival together, so we can make use of the astonishing local ballrooms of this city.
From September 10th to 14th (Wed - Sun) the first "Riga-Tangofestival" is going to take place. There will be a special website about this event so you can get plenty of information about Workshops and Milongas, then.
"Paris of the baltic States"
was the name of this town during the time between the
two World Wars. The reason for this was the feisty nightlife
and the cultural scene. Dynamical, creative and poetic
- Riga lured Componists, Poets and Artists into the town
for hundreds of years.
Because of its well situated place near the baltic sea - where east and west meets - Riga has been the most important Trading and Financial Centre for the last hundreds of years. Many nationalities - Latvians, Germans, Swedes, Russians, Polish - lived behind its walls to work and establish a high influence in this historical place.
A unique culture is owned by this town, which comes from still working medieval architecture and much art noveau. The UNESCO declared the town as World Cultural Heritage.

Where is Riga?
Riga belongs to which
one of the baltic States? Latvia! During my first trip
to Riga two years ago I switched the countries all the
time...Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania...during my geography
lessons I got used to the sound of this, but only now
we can travel there without problems and with visa.
I have to admit that
my first trip to Riga was because a crime thriller:
Mankells " Dogs of Riga"; I travelled there
because it was so cheap...thinking: Why not Riga?
I couldn't imagine how beautiful it was in the end. You will definitive like it with its restaurants (cheap, elegant, everything!), comfortable cafés and the rich and various history which determines the various town's look...nice architecture and most important to us dancers: a fresh, excited tango-scene which is happy to get known to new visitors.
I felt very comfortable,
even though it was very, very cold in January. In the
middle of the market place there's been a ice-skating
place - very unusual. You were able to lend skates,
skate around the place and later on getting warm again
in one of the comfortable cafés around. In the evening
you could watch the Icehockey-Pro's during their training.
But I don't want you to freeze, so we will be there
in Spring and Fall.
Only few people know
about Rigas wonderful art noveau architecture and the
wonderful restaurated historical district, where our
hotel resides.
the tangoscene evolves very fast. Two years ago you could barely find any Dance Couples, but nowadays there are regular milongas and practicas on Thursday.
